Steel Pulse Reggae

Steel Pulse reggae band started out in 1975. Their commitment to educating the masses, fighting injustice and spreading the positive vibration of Jah Message through spiritually uplifting music, has never waned.

They are probably the United Kingdom’s most hightly respected roots reggae outfit, originally forming at Handsworth Wood Boys School, Birmingham and comprising David Hinds (lead vocals, guitar), Basil Gabbidon (lead guitar, vocals) and Ronnie McQueen (bass).

They were initially refused live dates in Caribbean venues in the Midlands because of their Rastafarian beliefs.
Eventually they teamed up to support Burning Spear and grabbed the attention of Island Records resulting in the release of ‘Ku Klux Klan’ which expressed the evils of racism. Their band now included Selwyn ‘Bumbo’ Brown (keyboards), Steve ‘Grizzly’ Nisbett (drums), Alphonso Martin (vocals, percussion) and Mykaell Riley (vocals).

The alliance with Island records soon soured and they switched to Elektra. They continued to urge them into a more mainstream vein, asking them to emulate the pop-reggae stance of Eddy Grant. This was not something they were not happy with.Rastafari Centennial was recorded live at the Elysee Montmartre in Paris and dedicated to the hundred year anniversay of the birth of Haile Selassie. It was the first recording since the defection of Fonso Martin, leaving the trio of David Hinds, Steve Nisbett and Selwyn Brown. While they still faced snobbery from British Reggae fans, in America they were the first ever reggae band to appear on the Tonight Television Show. Their exposure was raised further when in 1992 when Hinds challenged the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission in the Supreme High Court, asserting that their cab drivers discriminated against black people in general but more specifically Rastas.

Steel Pulse songs and music are political, irie and hardcore, they don’t hold back, no way, and continue to this day for equal rights and justice for all peoples.

Steel Pulse Albums include True Democracy, Earth Crisis, African Holocaust, Rastafari Centennial Live in Paris, Tribute to the Martyrs, Handsworth Revolution, Living Legacy, Sound System The Island Anthology, Babylon the Bandit, Victims, State of Emergency, Rage and Fury, Vex, Rastanthology
